Two Towns

Catching up a bit with recent watercolors.  Downtown Sierra Madre was exciting on the Saturday morning we were there to paint.  The city is very popular for cycling groups so there were many bikes.  It was also during a Scarecrow Festival a local art group sponsors.  Lots of activity!

A few weekends earlier we were at the San Gabriel Mission to paint.  There is a nice park across from the Mission with downtown views.  I had a bit of city buildings, banners, and a pretty pepper tree to paint.

Two Parks

Recently I've painted at two parks where I haven't painted before.  Just yesterday the Saturday paint-out group visited Almansor Park in Alhambra.  I've driven by many times but never visited or painted there.  It was really wonderful to be there to paint between the rainstorms we've been having.  There is a duck pond which was full of mud hens (coots).  There also were some wigeon ducks and loud Canada geese.

In November we painted at Oak Grove Park in Pasadena.  I've been driving through this park to get to the lower Hahamongna Park but this time we stayed in Oak Grove.  These parks are busy on weekends but I was able to find a great view of the mountains and distant homes.  It would be fun to try these pieces again.  There's always something to fix or try another approach.

Some Sketches

I've been wanting to do more sketching...of course.  I know other artists who sketch all the time, every day.  I never got into the habit of daily sketching and carrying a sketchbook wherever I go.  I've done a few recent sketches that have maybe given me a push.  It began with my friend Barbara's holiday get-together for painting friends when I sketched her dog, Frankie.  He was napping in his chair.  Perfect.  Then another sketch of a planter of succulents for a Facebook group's project.  I tried using toned paper with water-soluble pencils and some gouache.  I continued with some flowering branches.  It's a fun start and there are so many materials to experiment with.
